Welcome to Stages School of Dance. Whether your child is a first year or a returning student, we encourage you to read our newsletters, as they contain vital dance parent information. In Cranbrook, Golden, and Creston BC, our school is a leader in offering the best dance education, and parent involvement is part of what makes that possible.

Our Objective and Methods

The purpose of the ballet/tap combo class and the creative dance and beginning level classes are to introduce your child to the art of dance. Throughout the year, your child will learn to explore movement, music, and rhythm, as well as body discipline and awareness. The courses are designed to develop appropriate skills for the particular age groups. Dancers gain self-confidence by interacting with teachers and peers without having a parent in class.

Emphasis is placed on fun and developing positive self-esteem as the child enters one of their earliest classroom situations and learns to follow simple instruction. Locomotor skills are taught and reinforced using music and simple dance steps. Please do not set your expectations too high for your child, as you do not want them to feel pressure to achieve something that they may not be physically ready to achieve. Remember that these classes are introductory and the goal is for the child to use their imagination through dance and to have fun.

A Few Notes To Remember

The monthly studio calendar and the dancer parent handbook are posted on the website. The latter contains an abundance of information regarding all aspects of the dance studio, i.e., class attire, recital times, and more. Please read thoroughly, as most of your questions are answered in this booklet. Ensure you are receiving the monthly newsletter by logging onto our website. Click on “newsletter” to read or print it. We also email out a basic version, or you can pick up a printed copy from the studio office.

For your copy of the monthly calendar, go to our website and click on the “calendar” button. You can then download the monthly calendar PDF file. If holidays are coming up and you do not know if your class is running or when the make-up class will be, please check the website until it is posted. We also email this information to you.

Essential Dance Parent Information

If you are dropping your child off for their class, please escort them directly to and from their class, as we do not want any young children waiting outside for parents.

  • Please bring dancers up the back entrance into the waiting room and pick them up at the waiting room. When teachers are releasing kids from class, we cannot, for security reasons, have them exiting both doors. This is for the safety of your children.
  • Please remove outdoor footwear at the front entrance, as dancers traveling between studios must have clean floors to keep their dance shoes in good condition.
  • If black marks appear on tights and shoes, these marks are from the nickel in tap shoes and should wash out easily.
  • If your child requires dance footwear or clothing, please see your calendar/handbook for what is required. The studio dancewear store, Modern Movement, provides the attire required for class.
  • Please ensure your child has used the washroom and has had their drink/snacks before lessons, as multiple breaks are disruptive to the entire class.
  • There will be set observation days throughout the year for you to watch your child dance from inside the classroom. We encourage you to leave them in the care of their instructor starting the first week. However, if you feel your child needs help integrating into the class in the beginning weeks, the studio has an open door policy. As soon as you feel that your child is ready, please observe only on the set watch days outlined in the student handbook.

If you have any further questions regarding your child and dance, please feel free to contact Miss Sheri at 426-6735 or between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays, or stop in the studio office from 4:00-6:00 Monday-Thursday and speak with one of the office staff. Have a wonderful year of dance.
